On Saturday, July 1st 2017 at 1:44 p.m., The Joplin Police Department received a call of a single vehicle crash on Interstate 44 at the 10.6 mile marker, near the Missouri 249 interchange.
Officers arrived to find a 2007 Harley Davidson tricycle had left the roadway into the center median and struck the center cable barrier. Officers have determined that the probable contributing circumstance to the crash was likely mechanical defects. Both occupants of the vehicle were wearing DOT approved helmets.
The driver Rolland Looney, 70 of Lee's Summit MO was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later transferred for further treatment. Mr. Looney was pronounced dead at the University of Kansas hospital on Thursday, July 6th 2017. The passenger in the vehicle, Helen Looney, 72 of Lees Summit MO was transported for serious injuries.
This marks the third traffic fatality in Joplin for 2017 and the fourth traffic fatality in the last calendar year.
