Barton County traffic stop results in arrest of Joplin man for possession of a controlled substance

(From the Barton County Sheriff's Office)

On 12-15-2017 deputies with the Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a stranded motorist on I-49 approximately four miles north of Lamar at around 5:30 p.m.

Prior to the arrival, a second caller called into the Sheriff's Office and advised that it appeared as if a person from the stranded vehicle had stolen items from a round top or storage building in the area.

Deputy Christopher Morris arrived on scene assisted by a Missouri State Highway Patrolman and made contact with two subjects. A 49-year-old male and a 21-year-old female both of Joplin Missouri.

As the deputy approached the subjects, the male tossed an item under the vehicle. The item was later located and identified as a bottle of prescription medication. The investigation continued and no stolen items were found in the vehicle or in their possession.

The male subject was arrested for being in possession of the medication (Possession of a controlled substance.) The female subject was transported to the Barton County Jail where she contacted a friend to come and pick her up.

Reports will be sent to the Barton County Prosecuting Attorney for consideration in filing formal criminal charges.

The medications will be sent to the crime lab for analysis and identification of the medications.
