Three Neosho children killed, six other people injured in three-vehicle crash on 86

Three Neosho children were killed and six other people injured in a three-vehicle crash 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on MO 86, two miles east of Stark City.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Stephen J Shaffer, 53, Sarcoxie, struck a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Leticia Verde, 32, Neosho, causing it to lose control and cross the center line, where it was struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Michael L. Stephens, 38, Fairview. The Verde vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.

Benjamin J. Verde, 4, Eric G. Verde, 7, and Isaac O. Verde, 2, all of Neosho, were pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Newton County Coroner Jerry Deems.

Letitia Verde and Stephens were taken to Mercy Hospital, Joplin, with serious injuries.

Two passengers in the Stephens vehicle, Shawna Campbell and Presley Darby, ages unknown, were treated for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, with Campbell being airlifted.

Two other passengers in the Stephens vehicle, Bentley Stephens, age unknown, and Harley Stephens, 15, were treated for serious injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

The fatalities were the 113th, 114th, and 115th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
