4th Street to be closed between Murphy Boulevard, Grand Avenue for two weeks

(From the City of Joplin)

Starting Monday, October 15, 4th Street will be closed between Murphy Boulevard and Grand Avenue for repairs to the railroad crossing. The work is expected to be completed by the end of Friday, October 26, weather permitting.

Message boards have been placed to alert drivers to this upcoming closure. Businesses in the area will be accessible during the construction period.

The railroad repair work is part of a cost-sharing agreement with Kansas City Southern Railroad (KCS). KCS will be installing concrete panels at the crossing. Crews with the City of Joplin will complete pavement repairs outside the railroad crossing areas to improve the pavement for approaching vehicles.

Cost for the repairs is $200,000, with the City’s share set at $100,000. Funding for the project is through the Capital Improvement Sales Tax, that was renewed by voters in 2014.

Detours will be in place and drivers may want to use alternate routes. While in the area, drivers are urged to use extreme caution. The City appreciates the public’s patience while this work is being done to improve the crossing.

For questions, please contact Paul Zerkel, Traffic Engineer with the City of Joplin, at 417-624-0820, ext. 598.

  1. Since the railroad will be involved in project we can assume that won't be a 5 year project like Cone Street (20th street). We can be assured that the railroad won't pave a street on a Friday then tear it out again on Monday.
