Waynesville kindergartener brings ice cream with the mayor tour to Joplin.

(From the City of Joplin)

Not every day does Joplin Mayor Gary Shaw get to eat ice cream, however when a very young Missouri citizen invited him, he couldn’t resist!

Kindergartener Taylor Duncan will meet Mayor Shaw at 12 noon on Thursday, October 18 at his office in Joplin City Hall for introductions and a brief history of Joplin. Then comes the best part of their visit – they’ll meet again at Sweet Caroline’s for ice cream cones sprinkled with conversation.

Although not the traditional visit for dignitaries, this Waynesville five-year-old girl had a plan long before arriving to Joplin. Earlier this year, Taylor set a goal of visiting every city in Missouri to have ice cream with the mayor in each city. She’s making good progress and Mayor Shaw is pleased to host her during her Joplin visit.

“I enjoy talking with people who are new to our city because we have a great history and story to tell,” said Shaw. “But when the visit includes eating ice cream, I don’t think anyone would decline such a great offer!”

The project started in August, with Taylor posting the following on Facebook: “Hi! My name is Taylor and I'm 5 years old. Right now I'm learning about the state of Missouri. I learned that the ice cream cone was started here in 1904 at the St. Louis Fair. I thought it would be fun to try and have ice cream with every mayor in our state and learn about their city. I would even like to try and have ice cream with the governor. Please let me know when you would be available.”

Since then, they’ve been to numerous cities to meet their mayors and attended a conference in Branson, Mo., where they met even more mayors.
