Joplin Police arrest car thief 13 minutes after theft

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On October 31, 2018 at 7:42 a.m. officers responded to the 2800 block of South Wisconsin for a vehicle theft that had just occurred.

The victim was warming up her vehicle, preparing to load her kids, and watched a male get into the vehicle and take off.

Officers responded to the area to look for the vehicle. One officer recalled recovering a stolen vehicle near 28th and Minnesota the week prior that had been parked there after a theft.

He drove to that location and at 7:55 a.m. and observed the stolen vehicle, a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan, backed into a driveway at 2724 South Minnesota and the suspect removing items from the vehicle such as a car seat. The officer approached the male and took him into custody and the van was returned to the owner.

The suspect, John E. Gregory III, was charged by the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office with Stealing a Motor Vehicle with a $4,000 bond.

We remind residents that this time of year we see a spike in vehicle thefts in the mornings from people starting their cars and leaving them unattended.
