Spiva Art Gallery will showcase the work by art students at Missouri Southern State University with a second Senior Art Show opening on Monday, Dec. 3. It will feature works by senior bachelor of fine arts-studio majors Jocelyn Lechuga, Makenzie Wesley and Lydia Humphreys.
Lechuga’s work blends pop culture with her Mexican heritage, drawing inspiration from both equally. She also enjoys exploring other important things that make Mexican culture what it is, and how it’s represented to the world.
The unparalleled beauty and diversity found in nature is a source of inspiration for Wesley’s current body of work. Being a native of the Midwest, her ceramic work contains imagery of indigenous moths and butterflies that populate the region.
Humphreys’ paintings explore the diverse emotional reactions of individuals who have experienced trauma. Each subject is videoed while sharing their story, and a single frame is taken from that recording – the color purple featured as it is representational of the emotional scars and bruises that people obtain through their life.
A reception for the artists will be offered from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free and open to the public.
