On Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 7:35pm the Joplin Police Department responded to East 32nd, Food 4 Less, for a vehicle theft that had just occurred.
A female was driving a male that she knew around town in her vehicle. She decided she no longer wanted him in his vehicle and pulled into Food 4 Less and told him to get out.
The male refused to exit the vehicle and took the victim’s phone and keys.
Eventually, the female ended up outside of the vehicle and the male in the driver’s seat. The male started the vehicle and assaulted the female by punching her numerous times and then dragged her with the vehicle as he left in her car.
A JPD Sergeant responding to the scene located the vehicle northbound at 20th and Range Line.
A JPD Sergeant responding to the scene located the vehicle northbound at 20th and Range Line.
The vehicle went west on 20th Street and a pursuit was initiated near 20th and Connecticut. At 18th and Massachusetts the vehicle lost control, hit a curb, left the roadway and the vehicle was disabled. The male had fled on foot before the officer caught up to the vehicle.
Due to witnesses in the neighborhood and a trail of discarded clothing, officers knew the general area in which the suspect had fled to. A perimeter was set up and a K9 tracked to the back yard of 1721 South Massachusetts. The suspect was located hiding under a wheelbarrow and apprehended by K9. He was taken to a local hospital and was treated and released.
The victim in this case, a 24-year-old female from Arkansas, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect in this case, Ryan D. Ewing, 25, Joplin, is currently held in the Joplin City Jail. Charges are being submitted to the Newton County Prosecutor’s Office for Robbery in the Second Degree. Charges are being submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for tampering with a motor vehicle, felony resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended and driving while intoxicated. Ewing also had a Felony Probation Violation Warrant for drugs and two JPD City Warrants.
It should be noted the victim and suspect in this case knew each other and had been together before the crime. This was not a random incident.
