Pittsburg High School goes into lockdown after "credible" shooting threat, juvenile arrested

(From the Pittsburg Police Department)

On Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at approximately 9:44 a.m., a Crawford County deputy assigned to Pittsburg High School as a school resource officer reported being notified by several students of a threat by a subject indicating an intent to come to the Pittsburg High School with firearms and shoot up the school.

As the threat was deemed credible, officers from the Pittsburg Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff's Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the high school as it was placed on lockdown.

As a precaution, other area community schools were also put on soft lockdown as the investigation commenced.

The initial investigation revealed a subject had forwarded threats to shoot up the school via social media to students at the high school, who then immediately reported the incident leading to the lockdown and law enforcement response.

Officers were quickly able to identify the subject making the threats and determine that the threat was credible and the subject may have the means to carry out the threat.

Officers responded to a residence in Pittsburg where they located the juvenile subject they believe is responsible for the threats and took the subject into custody without further incident.

The investigation into this incident remains ongoing at this time and a determination of charges has yet been made, however, we believe the subject acted alone in this incident and the schools subsequently returned to normal operations.

While it is unfortunate this incident occurred in our community, we must acknowledge the students who immediately came forward and reported this incident to law enforcement coupled with the strong partnerships between the schools and law enforcement that allowed us to respond and resolve this incident quickly.

Anyone having information related to this incident or other incidents is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at 620-231-1700 or on our tip line 620-232-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.
