Winners announced for 2019 Student Research Symposium at MSSU

Winners have been announced for the 2019 Student Research Symposium, held April 17 at Missouri Southern State University.

More than 60 students created presentations in one of six categories: Humanities; Business, Engineering and Technology; Social Sciences; Physical and Biological Sciences; Health Sciences; and Education. Students created posters to visually share their work.

The 2019 winners are:

Business, Engineering and Technology

First place: Brian Smith, Joplin, and Mark Capps, Carthage, “Harnessing Analog Electrical Signals to Control Manufacturing Processes”

Second place: Steven Stokes, Joplin, “The Effect of Health Insurance Market Concentration on Premiums”

Physical and Biological Sciences


First place: Haroldo Hernandez, Joplin, “The Role of Alterations in SLC2A10, FBLN5 and ELN Genes in the Likelihood of Developing Tortuous Arteries”

Second place: Nathan Piccoli, Osceoloa, Mo., “Fat, Feisty and Fast? Striking and Constriction Performance from Borneo Pythons”

Social SciencesFirst place: Miranda Johnson, Joplin, “Evaluating the Risk of Burnout and Self-Care Practices of Case Managers”

Second place: Holly Haner, Liberty, Mo., “Shadowing Justice: Gubernatorial Clemency in American States”

Health Sciences


First place: (tie) Jacob Sholl, Carthage, Ill., “Body Mass Index & the Likelihood of Embarrassment when Exercising with Others”; and Kate Stauffer, Joplin, “Relationship Between Ankle Flexibility and Kicking Speed in Competitive Swimmers”
