The Environmental Health Club at Missouri Southern State University will celebrate a belated Earth Day with activities planned for Wednesday, May 1, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom.
There will be a variety of booths dedicated to sustainability issues and green ideas. Guest speakers will offer presentations on issues ranging from hazardous waste to water quality from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Award-winning entertainer and educator Steve Trash will offer a show that combines magic with environmental science themes. He has appeared at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, was a featured guest on “Reading Rainbow” and was the featured entertainment at the 2011 Keep America Beautiful “Great American Cleanup” national kickoff in New York City’s Times Square.
At 1 p.m., prizes will be announced for the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” contest for area middle- and high-school students. Entries will range from art projects utilizing recycled materials to informational posters. Winners will receive refurbished electronics.
Those attending the events can sign in for a chance to win door prizes. Every hour there will be a drawing for two refurbished tablets.
“We received a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, through Region M of the Harry S. Truman Council,” said Dr. Mike Fletcher, professor of biology and environmental health, and the club’s advisor. “Giving away refurbished electronics helps save materials and resources from getting into the environment.”
