Pollinator Club, Joplin Area Beekeepers Association to hold two classes on MSSU prairie Saturday

(From Southern News Service)

The MSSU Pollinator Club, in conjunction with the Joplin Area Beekeepers Association, will host two classes for students and community members on Saturday, April 27 on the MSSU prairie. The first session is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m., with the second scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The classes will focus on how to split (reproduce) beehives and how to raise new queen bees. An expert in queen production from the JABA will teach the classes free of charge.

“This presents a great opportunity for Missouri Southern State University to increase its connections with the community and draw attention to our work with bees, but also to the campus as a whole,” said Dr. Mary K. Kilmer, assistant professor of Biology and Environmental Health at MSSU.

“The classes will use our current beehives as raw materials and we get to keep - and sell - any queens that we successfully produce, which would go into our student research fund.”

There has been a lot of interest in this event, and people need to pre-register. They can do so by visiting the Joplin Area Beekeepers Association’s Facebook page – or by emailing Dr. Kilmer directly (kilmer-m@mssu.edu).
