Joplin man killed in three-vehicle accident at 7th and Duquesne, charges to be filed against Carthage man

A Joplin man was killed in a three-vehicle accident 8:47 a.m. today at MO 66 in Duquesne.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Lexus ES350 driven by Kenton G. Cowgill, 36, Carthage, failed to yield and struck a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by Robert D. McDermid, 66, Joplin, and a 1999 Dodge Caravan driven by Stanley E. Ball, 71, Springfield.

Dr. Jennifer Kolodchak pronounced McDermid deceased 9:38 a.m. at Mercy Hospital.

Cowgill was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Joplin Police Department Captain Trevor Duncan told KOAM the crash occurred after officers checked on a report of a vehicle blocking a driveway on the 800 block of South Rex with a driver who appeared to be passed out. As officers investigated to see if the man was under the influence, he made a run for it and headed east on 7th where he was followed by a Duquesne officer and eventually caused the fatal accident.

The report indicated Cowgill was in JPD custody and that multiple charges will be filed against him.

The fatality was the 68th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
