Joplin man charged with assaulting police officer, resisting arrest

The suspect in this incident has been identified as Michael C. Yarga, age 34 of Joplin. 

On March 21st, 2022, the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed charges against Yarga for Assault in the 3rd Degree- Special Victim (Class D Felony) and Resisting/Interfering with Arrest, Detention or Stop (Class A Misdemeanor). He was denied bond. 

Yarga is currently in stable condition at a local hospital and is under law enforcement guard. 








The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per department policy. The names of officers involved in the incident are still being withheld at this time. Further updates may be released as they become available.

On March 19 at 2317 hours, officers with the Joplin Police Department contacted three individuals in the west alley of 9th and Connor. 

During the contact, a male fled on foot and officers pursued. In the area of 10th and Chestnut the subject turned and assaulted one of the pursuing officers. 

A second officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. The officer was treated and released. 

The second officer has been placed on administrative leave, pending an administrative investigation. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has been asked to conduct the criminal investigation.
