In conjunction with Connect2Culture, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and Global Leaders program at Missouri Southern State University will host a workshop and performance by Las Cafeteras at 2 p.m. Friday, April 1, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium.Born and raised east of the Los Angeles River, the members of Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East L.A .sound and positive messages. Their music works to promote activism and to build bridges between different cultures. Using traditional son jarocho instruments, Las Cafeteras sings in English, Spanish and Spanglish, blending rock, hip-hop and ranchera into their unique sound.
The interactive workshop and musical performance on campus is free and open to the public. Las Cafeteras will discuss the current political climate, culture shift, and how to build powerful safe spaces for surrounding communities.
Las Cafeteras will also perform a concert at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2, in the Joplin Empire Market courtyard. Admission to the Connect2Culture performance is $25, with a 10-percent discount for students, seniors, veterans and active military personnel.
