(From the Joplin Fire Department)At 4:40 pm Thursday, Joplin Fire units, Joplin Police Department, and Metro Emergency Transport System were dispatched to the 1400 block of Virginia for a reported warehouse fire.
While responding to the incident the Joplin 911 center advised there were two possible patients with burns.
First arriving units found a warehouse that had previously been used as cold storage with heavy smoke showing from the structure and two victims outside of the structure.
The two victims were immediately treated by METS ambulance personnel while Joplin Fire crews made an aggressive attack on the fire and searched the structure to ensure there were no other victims.
One male victim was transported by ambulance with critical burn injuries, the name of the victim is currently being withheld pending notification of family. The second victim refused transport to the hospital. The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries to firefighters.
The Joplin Fire Marshal has ruled the fire as accidental due to occupants grinding metal near combustible materials.
