(From the Joplin Police Department)On Thursday, March 17th, 2022, the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a call at 4:38 pm of a structure fire at in the 1400 block of south Virginia Avenue. Information was received that two individuals on scene had burn injuries.
Personnel with the Joplin Fire Department, Joplin Police Department and METS Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
One burn victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and the other was treated on scene.
The fire was quickly extinguished and was later ruled by the Joplin Fire Marshal to be accidental due to occupants grinding metal near combustible materials.
On Friday, March 18th, one of the victims in this incident had passed away from injuries sustained in the fire. He has been identified as Aaron T. Simons, age 50, of Kansas City, Missouri. Next of kin has been notified.
At this time there no criminal charges anticipated in this case. Further updates may be released as information becomes available
