Brand wins close Barton County Clerk race, Johnson wins five-way presiding commissioner race

Barton County Assistant County Clerk Nikki Brand won a heavily contested battle for county clerk today, defeating Katie Gastel by 14 votes, 1,260 to 1,246.

Brand, who has worked in the county for 25 years will replace longtime County Clerk Kristina Crockett who is retiring.

No candidates filed on the Democratic ticket.

The race was nowhere near as close for presiding commissioner where David W. Johnson received 1,196 votes to 535 for Judy Fast, 357 for Gerry Garrett, 287 for Terry Thieman and 250 for Kim O'Sullivan.

No Democrats filed for that post ensuring Johnson's election in November.
