City of Joplin offering free wood chips

(From the City of Joplin)

The City’s free tree limb drop-off has been a popular program and is the source of an upcoming giveaway of FREE wood chips, which serve as good mulch for trees and bushes.

Wood chips will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, August 19, and Saturday, August 20. Wood chips are self-serve and citizens are encouraged to bring buckets and/or shovels to help with this work.

THIS FREE EVENT IS OPEN TO EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF RESIDENCY.

The wood chips are available near the tree limb drop-off located at 1702 North Schifferdecker Avenue, six-tenths of a mile north of Belle Center Road on the west side of Schifferdecker. Wood chips will be available on the third Friday and Saturday in September and October as the supply allows.

The City’s wood chips are derived from many different trees mixed together during the grinding process. They can serve as mulch for trees and bushes and can be used for general gardening and laying on trails. Wood chips are effective in controlling soil erosion and insulating plant roots against extreme temperatures. Mulching reduces evaporation thus the need to water, which helps conserve water resources. Placing wood chips around plants and trees also controls weeds thus reducing the need for herbicides, which helps prevent water pollution.

For more information regarding wood chips, call the Recycling Coordinator at 417-624-0820, ext. 1501.
