(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)We have experienced a recent uptick in calls regarding scams.
No police or government agency requests payment by gift cards. We do not threaten to put you in jail if you don't pay us with gift cards. This is a scam.
Being requested to mail large sums of cash is not legitimate. This is a scam.
Being mailed an unsolicited check by the "lottery" to pay the taxes on your winnings is not legitimate.
Especially if you don't play the lottery! This is a scam.
Please don't be a victim of scammers. If it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't!
