Jasper police check on Joplin sex offender leads to meth arrest

(From the Jasper Police Department)

On Wednesday, August 24th, 2022 at 1031 hours, Jasper PD made contact with two male subjects working on a house across from Jasper Schools and across from Eagles Nest Daycare.

A license check of a white truck at the residence showed it to check back to a registered sex offender, Bryan Burton (indecent liberties with a child 12 years or younger).

Due to the residence being close to Jasper Schools and Eagles Nest Preschool, contact was made with the two subjects, Bryan Burton (Joplin) and Steven Talbot (Joplin).

While speaking to Talbot, the officer smelled an odor of burnt marijuana coming from his person. After questioning, Talbot admitted that he smokes marijuana and smoked marijuana this morning.

Talbot was asked to empty his pockets in which he did, he pulled out items from his right pants pocket; the officer saw a pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine in his right hand. Talbot attempted to conceal the pipe.

Talbot was taken into custody for possession of meth related drug paraphernalia. A search of Talbot’s wallet turned up a plastic baggy with a small amount of methamphetamine inside.

After questioning, Talbot stated he found the meth pipe on the ground and was going to throw it away because he didn’t want a child to get it. The officer did not believe that story, and especially did not believe it after finding meth in his wallet.

Talbot was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia as well as an active warrant out of Webb City PD.

Burton was asked to leave the residence and to advise the company he works for that Talbot is not recommended back at the residence due to possession of meth.
