Carl Junction Police Department warns of credit card skimmer

(From the Carl Junction Police Department)

On March 22, 2023, a local resident fueled her car at a convenience store in Carl Junction, using her credit card at the pump. Later in the day, she was alerted by her bank that her card had been used to purchase fuel in another state.

It was found that several other bank cards had also been compromised on the same day.

Investigation found that someone had forced open the fuel pump and plugged in a device that would detect the card information and transmit it to a remote receiver. There were no external indications that the fuel pump had been tampered with. No other pumps were affected. Investigation into this incident is continuing.

The Carl Junction Police Department is advising people take care when using your card at a fuel pump. Monitor your accounts and if you notice a suspicious transaction, immediately notify your financial institution or card issuer. Then contact your local law enforcement agency.

Our department is working with local convenience stores to thwart this type of criminal activity. Pumps at these area locations have been checked and secured, and employees have been instructed in what to look for when inspecting equipment.

If you have questions, contact the Carl Junction Police Department at 417-649-7070.

Please share this information - skimming can occur anywhere!
