(From Cornell Complex)The official opening celebration of the Harry M. Cornell Arts & Entertainment Complex took place in November 2022. This November marks one year since the state-of-the-art performing and visual arts Complex opened.
Since its opening, the Complex has been home to more than 400 events, entertaining more than 28,000 people. In celebration, the primary resident organizations of the Complex, Connect2Culture and Spiva Center for the Arts, will host a weekend of events and activities.
Connect2Culture will present a workshop and performance with pianist and St. Louis-native Brian Woods on Saturday, November 4th. Woods will host a free informational workshop about his journey as a pianist at 1pm, followed by a dazzling, paid performance at 7pm. Tickets for the performance ($10–$15, plus fees) may be purchased at connect2culture.org, (417) 501-5550, or at the C2C box office inside the Cornell Complex (Tue–Sat, 1–5pm).
Spiva Center for the Arts will welcome the public to experience its recently opened exhibits: Joy Spiva Cragin 76th Annual Membership Show, Mark Cowardin: Chit Chat, Inspired: Celebrating Indigenous Culture, and JRAC Presents: Good Things Come in Small Packages.
A ribbon cutting with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce will be held on the following Monday, November 6th, at 2pm in the Freeman Health System Grand Lobby.
DLR Group, in partnership with Corner Greer Architects, developed the Complex to optimize flexibility for the performing and visual arts. The DLR Group design, inspired by the forms of the zinc mined in Joplin, is set within an urban green where the stage opens onto an outdoor amphitheater, further enhancing the accessibility of the venue to the community.
The Harry M. Cornell Arts & Entertainment Complex is a multifunctional visual and performing arts center. The building, an intentional home for the arts in Joplin, brings Connect2Culture, George A. Spiva Center for the Arts, and more together under one roof. The Cornell Complex educates, enlightens, and entertains, while attracting more people and activities to downtown Joplin and the region.
