City of Joplin asks public to remove Memorial Day decorations by Monday

 (From the City of Joplin)

City officials are respectfully reminding the public of their opportunity to remove and preserve Memorial Day decorations from graves in city cemeteries by Monday, June 3, to prevent the flowers and decorations from being discarded. Citizens who want to keep these decorations should remove them before that date. To ensure a safe and efficient cemetery maintenance process, the remaining decorations on gravesides will be discarded beginning June 3.

“We recognize the importance of keeping our cemeteries clean, mowed, and well-maintained,” said Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg.

“Flowers must be removed from gravesites to provide a clear and safe path for the mowers. We strive to be respectful of all those represented in our cemeteries and their loved ones. This is why we encourage those who have decorated their loved ones’ graves to remove flowers and other decorations before June 3 as a way to help us maintain a respectful and well-maintained facility for honoring those who have gone before us.”

The City of Joplin owns and operates four cemeteries, which are a division of Joplin Parks and Recreation. Cemeteries include:

Fairview Cemetery, 13th & Maiden Lane;
Forest Park Cemetery, 4th and Range Line;
Osborne Memorial Cemetery, west side of 33rd and McClelland Boulevard; and
Parkway Cemetery, east side of 33rd and McClelland Boulevard.
