MSSU's new food science and nutrition degree to be featured on Newsmakers

Missouri is projected to see a 14% increase in food science and nutrition jobs by the year 2030. Missouri Southern State University is working to prepare students to be part of that workforce by creating a new degree program. The Food Science and Nutrition degree will be the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Dr. Lisa Toms, MSSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dr. Andrea Cullers, Chair of the Department of Kinesiology, explain areas of study for the new degree which will result in new staff and a new lab. 








The degree will get funding support from a Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Amy Kaufman with the MO-KAN Partnership discusses growth in the regional food industry and how the trained workforce can be good for local businesses. Jamie Lofland from Schreiber Foods and Heath Browning of Darlington Snacks explain food industry operations from food safety to processing and packaging, that will be part of student studies.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of May 5 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
