Joplin, MO (SNS) – “Wichita,” an independent film shot on location in Kansas by Prestigious Films, will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Corley Auditorium at Missouri Southern State University.
Set in 1882, the film follows a fugitive on the hunt for a young man who has taken refuge in the quiet cowtown, and a bounty hunter who is hunting them both. The cast includes Justin France, Karina Wolfe and Blake Webb.
“It’s a dark, gritty, noir-style Western,” said Nicholas Barton, who wrote and directed the film.
Following the screening, the film’s director, executive producer and a few of the actors will be on hand for a meet and greet. Barton said the event at Missouri Southern will mark the film’s fourth official showing for audiences. It’s part of a tour that will screen “Wichita” throughout Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
“It’s a little backward in terms of how you approach it,” Barton said. “We’re trying to build regional buzz before we take it to film festivals later on this year.”
He said that the production company’s location in Kansas made a Western an ideal genre for the story he wanted to tell.
“Our location makes us really unique,” he said. “It’s impossible in New York or Los Angeles to find these kinds of wide-open spaces and sunsets. For a (big-budget) Western, they’d have to have a budget of $30-40 million just to consider it.”
Tickets for the “Wichita” screening are $10, or $6 with a school ID. They will be available at the door.
