(From City of Joplin)
In honor of the City of Joplin’s 142nd birthday, Brad Belk, Director of Joplin Museum Complex, is working with City officials to host a public birthday party featuring some of our younger citizens. Students from the Kelsey Norman Elementary will provide the program by sharing their artwork, and reading some of the historical essays they have written about Joplin.
Joplin’s birthday celebration begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 23 in the main lobby of Joplin City Hall, 602 South Main.
“We are turning the program over to the students, because they are the future leaders of Joplin.” said Belk. “Ideally, we want to enrich our kids with the rich history of Joplin, while also celebrating our City’s birthday, so we combined the two for this fun event. We hope the public will join us.”
During this event, Kelsey Norman’s second-graders will share stories on what Joplin means to them. In addition, some of the students drew pictures relating to Joplin’s history. Joplin Mayor Mike Seibert will also present a proclamation in honor of Joplin’s 142nd birthday.
The public is invited to come enjoy the stories of how the younger generations view the Joplin community, as well as enjoy the artwork by the second- graders that will be displayed in the main lobby of City Hall.
Refreshments will be served in honor of the City’s 142nd Birthday. This event has been coordinated by Belk and staff at the Museum, along with Joplin City Clerk Barbara Hogelin.
Joplin was incorporated by the state of Missouri as a city on March 23, 1873.
