In recognition of America Recycles Day November 15, the Joplin Recycling Center is hosting special events on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Center.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 11 and 12, Joplin residents may come to the Center and pick up a FREE Welded-Wire Compost Bin along with an instructional brochure and a sample bag of “SproutFaster” an organic fertilizer made from worm castings---while supplies last.
During this time, Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists will demonstrate and answer questions about recycling yard and kitchen waste into compost and the benefits of using natural or organic fertilizers. Organic resources are usually carbon based, thus they are not harmful to people or the environment. Conversely, chemical based fertilizers often contain petroleum, which, if applied improperly, can pollute our waterways after entering storm drains.
In addition, during this time residents can also learn how to make a DOG WASTE DIGESTER from a plastic garbage can or bucket and lid thus creating a “backyard mini septic system.” The digesters are beneficial to homeowners, neighbors and the environment because by placing dog waste into a digester, it prevents rainwater from washing the waste and bacteria into storm drains and polluting our waterways.
Both events held on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Joplin Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street.
The Center is open Tuesday and Thursday from 12 noon to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
