Cherokee County home invader shot, dies at Joplin hospital

(From Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

At approximately 10:21 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a shooting, which had occurred at 120 McClung Street in West Mineral.

Deputies and investigators responded to the scene, and also responded to Mercy Maude Norton Hospital in Columbus, where Erik Edward Jones, 37, of West Mineral, was being transported by private vehicle.

Jones was later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, where he died on Tuesday morning from apparent gunshot wounds.

The preliminary investigation indicates Jones was armed when he and two other subjects, a male and a female, went to the residence at 120 McClung Street, confronting and threatening the resident.

The resident, who was also armed, shot Jones before Jones and the other suspects fled the scene.

At this time, investigators are attempting to identify the two other individuals with Jones at the time of the shooting. They are believed to be driving a 2014 Chevy Spark, bearing Kansas License Plate 425JWG.
