(From the Joplin Public Library)
Joplin Public Library joins thousands of other libraries across the country that will celebrate Teen Tech Week starting Monday, March 6 through Friday, March 10, 2017. The week’s activities are geared toward increasing awareness about how libraries are creating spaces to extend teens’ learning beyond the classroom by providing them areas of engagement so they can explore, create and share content.
Youth in grades sixth through twelfth are invited to the Teen Space in Joplin’s Library from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 6 through Friday, March 10 for a preview of technology activities planned in the new building's Teen Makerspace. A different tech will be featured each day, along with hands-on demonstrations and help with the library's electronic book service and online databases. The activities are planned so teens can come and go as their schedules allow. There will not be a program on Wednesday, March 8.
Registration is not necessary, and no fees are needed to attend. Teens attending could win a free book during the event. This year’s Teen Tech theme is “Be the Source of Change”. Teen Tech Week is held annually the second week of March. For more information, visit www.ala.org/teentechweek or click on the link at the end of this article.
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technology, especially the types offered through libraries. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to take advantage of the technology at libraries for education and recreation, and to recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals who can help them achieve greater digital literacy.
