The Art Department at Missouri Southern State University will team with the Small Business & Technology Development Center for the fifth annual Art as Business Symposium.
Set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the North End Zone Facility, participants will receive expert insight into the business end of the arts. Presentations by regional art and business professionals will highlight opportunities and career challenges for artists.
Speakers will include:
· Emily Frankoski, director of the Joplin-based Connect2Culture: “Recent Community Developments for Art.”
· Alex Gandy, director of career services at MSSU: “Resumes and the Importance of Being Prepared to Look for a Job After Graduation.”
· Joshua Morgan, senior web developer for creative services, Leggett & Platt: “Developing a Spectrum of Skill Sets, Critical Thinking Skills, and Not Getting Trapped in a Job Box.”
· Donald R. Simon, president of Simon Business Consulting Inc. in Kansas City: “Intellectual Property Rights.”
Design students will have an opportunity to participate in a separate breakout portfolio review session afterward.
“The symposium allows for us to cover topics that sometimes do not fit neatly into our already established curriculum,” said Frank Pishkur, chair of the Art Department. “It’s a service designed to expand our professional development efforts for our majo0rs and our regional community of artists, highlighting some of the resources, issues and concerns that artists need to navigate as they plan to pursue or continue their professional practice.”
Admission to the symposium is free and open to the public.
