Southern choral director to conduct at Carnegie Hall with MSSU Concert Chorale and Purdy High School Concert Choir performing

(From Southern News Service)

A special check presentation to help fund a Carnegie Hall performance is set for noon Friday, Feb. 8, in the choir room of the Fine Arts Building at Missouri Southern State University.

Dr. David Sharlow, director of choral activities at Missouri Southern, has been invited to serve as a guest conductor at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 10. Community singers from the Southern Symphonic Chorus and students from the Missouri Southern Concert Chorale will perform. They'll be joined by the Purdy (Mo.) High School Concert Choir and the Masterworks Chorus from Houston, Texas.

A total of 24 students from MSSU and 14 community members will be traveling to New York for the performance.

As an advocate of the arts in the Joplin area, Joplin's Frank Fletcher Toyota will be presenting a check on Friday to support students making the trip. Jim Adams, general manager, will be on hand for the presentation.

"I am excited about this opportunity for my students," says Sharlow. "It's a chance to perform in a historic hall with professional instrumentalists and a soprano soloist."
