(From the Jasper Police Department)On Wednesday, December 17th, 2020 at 1905 hours, a Jasper PD officer made contact with subjects occupying a white 2010 Chrysler Sebring with an expired Kansas temp tag, at the gas pumps of Pete's Convenience Store located at 309 N. 6th St., Jasper, Missouri.
The vehicle was parked at pump #3 with two white males in it, later identified as Tyler Roberts (driver's seat) and Alexander Strutz (passenger seat), both of Kansas City, Ks.
Roberts was observed talking with a male subject (Brian Schultz) of Raytown, Mo, who was seen getting out of the driver's seat of a black 2021 Kia Sedona mini-van.
The officer first observed the subjects around 6:45 pm while sitting in the parking lot. It appeared as if Roberts and Schultz knew each other based upon the body language and how close contact they were.
After about 15 minutes of watching the subjects in the Sebring sit in the vehicle and look over towards my patrol vehicle several times while in the vehicle, and the fact the driver of the black van was nowhere to be seen and appeared to be "hiding" inside Pete's, the officer pulled his patrol vehicle up behind the Sebring to make contact.
While speaking to Roberts and Stritz, both nervous, Strutz claimed he didn't have any identification. Also while speaking to them, the officer observed both walkie talkies clipped on cold weather gear coats, as well as binoculars and headband lights.
It was noted by the officer that the subjects could be involved in burglary type crimes, etc. , due to the officer’s training and experience that the items such as walkie talkies, binoculars, etc...
Note the totality of the observations by the officer and the items they possessed, are often used for burglary type crimes. Not everybody wearing camouflage with binoculars and walkie talkies, etc. are suspected burglars. Key here is TOTALITY of the entire incident up to this point.
While conducting a pat search for weapons on Strutz, a hard zip up sunglass pouch was pulled from his coat pocket. Strutz said the pouch had a "bad" pipe inside. Dispatch advised the following:
*Roberts had an active warrant out of Johnson County, Kansas for felony possession of a controlled substance and an active warrant out of Chillicothe PD for traffic. Both warrants were confirmed.
*Strutz had an active warrant out of Johnson County, Ks for possession of a controlled substance. The warrant was confirmed.
Once Jasper County Sheriff's Office arrived for backup, the officer entered Pete's to look for the third subject. He was found standing on the toilet attempting to hide. Brian Schultz was detained at this time. In the stall a set of keys from Roper Kia belonging to the brand new Kia Sedona was found, as well as a walkie talkie and a headband light.
When exiting, the store clerk advised that the subjects in the Sebring paid for the gas in the black Kia mini-van.
The officer was aware of a bulletin put out a few weeks ago about vehicles being stolen from Roper Kia in Joplin. The vehicles were stolen during business hours and had the keys in the vehicles.
Through investigation, it was determined the vehicle had just been stolen from Roper Kia and that the suspects had come down from Kansas City the night before for the sole purpose to steal the vehicle from Roper Kia. The suspects “cased” the Kia lot while in a field and waited for the right opportunity to steal the vehicle which had the keys in it.
All three subjects were transported to the Jasper County Jail and held for tampering with a motor vehicle.
3 Roper Kia SUV’s has been stolen recently in the same fashion and later recovered in the Kansas City area. It is believed one or all three subjects were involved in those thefts. An investigation continues into the past incidents.
All 3 persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
