Joplin City Councilman Mike Seibert, who was re-elected April 8, was the only candidate whose name was nominated for mayor moments ago and was elected unanimously.
City Councilman Ryan Stanley, who had just been sworn in for his first term, nominated Seibert for the post, after giving a short speech explaining why either Seibert or Councilman Gary Shaw would be excellent choices for the position.
In his first speech as mayor, Seibert asked for the city to come together and in the same way that Joplin set the standard for disaster recovery, that "together we set the standard for redevelopment and together we will have a bright future."
In the first divided vote of the new session, Councilman Morris Glaze was elected mayor pro tem in a 5-4 decision over Stanley.
The special session began with presentations to outgoing Mayor Melodee Colbert-Keen, who remains on the council, and outgoing City Councilwoman Trisha Raney. Outgoing City Councilman Jack Golden, who was absent due to a death in the family, would have also been honored.
City Council members Seibert, Stanley, Miranda Lewis, Shaw, and Mike Woolston were sworn in.
