An articulation agreement between Missouri Southern State University and St. Charles Community College to promote the Environmental Health & Safety program will be signed at 3 p.m. Wednesday on the campus of the two-year college near St. Louis.
“It’s not just an articulation agreement. It’s more of a partnership,” said Dr. Michael Fletcher, professor of biology and environmental health.
The degree is structured to teach students about the science of preventing physical, chemical or biological hazards from adversely impacting human health or the environment. Students in the program who pass their senior assessment exam obtain their Certified Environmental Health Specialist credentials with the state of Missouri.
The degree program requires 45 core hours of courses. The general education and science classes will be completed at the community college, with the environmental health courses from Missouri Southern offered online. Exams from those courses will be proctored by faculty at St. Charles.
“It’s a true partnership,” said Fletcher. “They’ll have someone on campus who will promote the degree and we’ll touch base every semester to see how things are going.”
“It’s an exciting opportunity for us to attract those students,” said Dr. Pat Lipira, vice president of academic affairs at Missouri Southern. “And it’s win-win, because it allows us to increase our numbers in the environmental health program while providing their students an opportunity to complete the degree program without leaving their own campus.”
