As subzero temperatures continue today, City officials remind citizens to check on family members, neighbors and friends to ensure their environment is adequate to endure the frigid conditions.
If needs arise for more suitable settings, the Salvation Army will be available tonight as a warming shelter for those in need. Salvation Army Captain James Curry announced their facility at 8th and Kentucky will be open starting at 5 p.m. through the morning for a warming shelter. Captain Curry said that this warming shelter will be open at 5 p.m. for the next three nights (tonight, Thursday, and Friday) and will operate through the night to help those in need.
In addition, City facilities are available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to help citizens keep warm. Facilities include:
City Hall, 602 South Main;
Joplin Health Department, 321 East 4th Street;
Dr. Donald Clark Public Safety Center, 303 East 3rd;
Joplin Athletic Center, 3010 West 1st Street;
Public Safety Training Center, 5500 Dennis Weaver Drive;
Joplin Regional Airport, 7331North Highway 43.
Also pet owners are reminded to please bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. It is also recommended to move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.
