(From Mercy)
Last March, Mercy made good on a promise to rebuild its hospital after a tornado devastated the city of Joplin, Missouri. Today, the 900,000-square-foot, multi-year project continues its award-winning streak.
Mercy Hospital Joplin has been named Best Health Care Project of the Year by Engineering News Record (ENR) and the Keystone Project of the Year by The Associated General Contractors of Missouri. The awards are based on safety, quality, schedule and overall difficulty of the work.
The 2011 Joplin tornado, which claimed 161 lives, was the deadliest U.S. tornado since 1947. Mercy, then St. John’s Regional Medical Center, took a direct hit, leaving it inoperable. The next day, Mercy president and CEO Lynn Britton assured co-workers, as well as the community, that the hospital would be rebuilt – and better than ever.
Over the next 46 months, McCarthy Building Company and Mercy constructed the new hospital in “about half the time normally required to design and build a hospital of similar size” and “set the standard in tornado readiness,” according to ENR.
