MSSU students receive awards at mock trial tournament

(From Southern News Service)

Two Missouri Southern State University students received awards during the Jayhawk Invitational Mock Trial Tournament, held Dec. 5-6 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Duncan Street, a junior political science major from Joplin, received the award for Top Attorney.

Makenzie Eby, a freshman political science major from Miami, Okla., received the award for Top Witness.

“There are six attorneys and six witnesses during each round. The judges use an intricate scoring system to rank each of the attorneys and witnesses,” said Dr. Joanna Derfelt, associate professor of political science and advisor for Missouri Southern’s mock trial team.

Mock trial teams from seven states competed in the invitational tournament. Missouri Southern fielded two teams for the event, said Derfelt.

Teams build their cases to present as well as prepare counter arguments. This year’s case involves charges that the chair of a gambling commission was bribed by a local casino owner to procure support for a new casino license.
