An annual giving project in a Criminal Justice class at Missouri Southern State University has ensured a comfortable Christmas for animals at the Joplin Humane Society.
The 28 students in JJ Spurlin’s Intro to Criminal Justice class raised funds and gathered donations that resulted in two truckloads of supplies – totaling nearly $2,000 – being delivered to the animal shelter earlier this week.
“The students did some traditional gumshoe work,” said Spurlin, an associate professor of criminal justice. “As community advocates, they need to be able to locate resources. A lot of them solicited businesses, churches and even lobbied pet stores. The more creative they were, the better. The only rule was they couldn’t use themselves or family members to procure the products.”
Among the items collected were pet food, toys, bowls and collars as well as monetary donations.
“We had one local pet store who gave students the employee discount to purchase supplies so the money went further while they were shopping,” said Spurlin.
Located at 140 E. Emperor Lane, the Joplin Humane Society is dedicated to finding forever homes for the unwanted, abandoned and neglected animals in their care. The shelter provides adoptions, rescue and foster care programs, public spay/neuter clinics and volunteer and education programs.
