Wrong-way driver on I-44 leads to two-fatality crash near Carthage

Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash 1:01 a.m. today on westbound I-44 at the 17.4 mile marker two miles west of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1995 Ford Econoline van driven by Dennis L. Becker, 39, Arma, Kansas, was eastbound in the westbound lane of I-44 and struck a 2013 GMC Sierra driven by William W. Hummingbird, 34, Buckeye, Arizona. Becker and Hummingbird were pronounced dead on the scene by Jasper County Deputy Coroner George Woodard.

Two passengers in the Hummingbird vehicle, Michelle W. Hummingbird, 47, and Jasmine M. Mares, 23, both of Buckeye, Arizona, were treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

The fatalities were the 59th and 60th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
