Freshman convocation Saturday at Missouri Southern

(From Southern News Service)

Incoming students will have a chance to learn about Missouri Southern State University and its traditions as well as hear from members of the faculty and administration during the annual First-Year Student Convocation, set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in Taylor Performing Arts Center.

“It’s a ceremony to welcome students and their families to Missouri Southern,” said Teresa Thompson, director of the First-Year Experience program. “Incoming freshmen are starting a new chapter in their lives, and we want to welcome them into the MSSU family.”

Dr. Alan Marble, president of Missouri Southern, will offer a special welcome. The ceremony’s guest speaker will be 2011 MSSU graduate Kisa Clark. She earned her master’s in communication from the University of Arkansas in 2014 and is currently a member of the Missouri Southern Communications Department faculty.

Freshmen who attend the First-Year Convocation will receive a medallion to be worn at graduation. Darren Fullerton, vice president for student affairs, and Dr. Paula Carson, provost/vice president for academic affairs, will officiate during the medallion ceremony.

The First-Year Experience office will host a reception at 3:30 p.m. on the campus Oval. Students will receive Lion Pride Weekend T-shirts and gather for a class photo with students wearing medallions with green lanyards. Students will wear the same medallions with gold lanyards when they graduate from Missouri Southern.

Families and guests are encouraged to attend. Business casual dress is requested. If you are a person with a disability and require accommodations for this event, please contact the First-Year Experience office at 417-625-9731 at least 72 hours in advance.
