The Southern Symphony Orchestra will offer a broad selection of music during a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.
“This concert is what I would call a potpourri – a mix of everything,” says Dr. Canes Nicolas, assistant professor of music and the orchestra’s conductor. “There’s music from the baroque, classical and romantic periods to the 20th and 21st centuries.”
Selections will include “Sinfonia in G” by Tomaso Albinoni, “Symphony No. 29” by Mozart, and “Danza No. 4” by Haitian composer Ludovic Lamothe.
“This is also the Nordic Semester at Missouri Southern, so we’ll feature ‘Peer Gynt Suite No. 1’ by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg,” says Nicolas. “And since the concert is a few weeks before Halloween, we thought ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ would be fun. There really is something for everybody.”
The Southern Symphony Orchestra concert marks Nicolas’ first since being named director shortly before the start of the Fall 2018 semester.
“I didn’t get to work with the full ensemble during my interview – only part of the orchestra,” he says. “I love their spirit. We’ll always work to get their energy and technique to a higher level, but we can do some great things with this ensemble.”
