Jason Sandbothe named Joplin Police Department Officer of the Month

(From the Joplin Police Department)

OFFICER OF THE MONTH
November 2018
Officer Jason Sandbothe

On November 5, 2018 Officer Sandbothe conducted a vehicle stop near 7th and Chestnut for traffic violations.

Prior to arresting a passenger in the vehicle for warrants, a meth pipe was found amongst several items she had just discarded in the vehicle. There was also another meth pipe under the driver’s seat. Further search of the vehicle was conducted and under the hood of the truck was a box labeled “FELONY BOX”, which contained 82 grams of Marijuana and 3 grams of Methamphetamine.

In a 5-gallon bucket in the bed of the truck were 7 mason jars and 5 full size bags tightly packed with Marijuana that collectively weighed 3,294 grams. The driver and passenger were arrested, and charges sought for Delivery of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia.

On November 11, 2018 Officer Sandbothe stopped a vehicle near 10th and Picher for multiple lane violations.

One of the passengers was arrested on several active warrants and K9 Pax was called in to assist with the stop. After alerting on the vehicle, a subsequent search found a bag of Methamphetamine under the passenger seat of the vehicle. The other passenger was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. A further search of the vehicle found a blue, cloth Walmart sack in the trunk of the vehicle.

Inside the sack were 76 bottles of a medication, which if taken in large doses can mimic the high from heroin. Also, in the trunk was a pair of red bolt cutters. Officer Sandbothe knew of a previous burglary report at Family Pharmacy at 3202 S. Indiana Ave where video of the incident showed multiple white males had used bolt cutters to enter the pharmacy, carrying sacks.

I also read in the report that the males had arrived in a white passenger car, where the tail lights went all the way across the back of the vehicle. The vehicle Officer Sandbothe stopped match that description as well. The suspect was arrested on his active warrants and driver was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. The prescription medications found in the vehicle were seized as evidence and the leads from this case were forwarded to the Investigations division for further follow up.

On November 13, 2018 Officer Sandbothe responded to Wal-Mart on west 7th Street for a larceny that had just occurred. The suspect, described as a white female with blonde hair, fled in a black Infinity passenger car. While responding to the call, Officer Sandbothe observed that vehicle and conducted a stop on it near 7th and Willard.

Officer Sandbothe found the suspect, hiding under a blanket in the back seat. While getting the driver out of the vehicle she jumped into the driver seat and attempted to flee in the vehicle, which resulted in a significant use of force event.

The suspect was eventually removed from the vehicle and transported to the jail. After arriving, the suspect then concealed narcotic items inside her person during a strip search. She was taken to the hospital where two baggies of Methamphetamine, collectively weighing 9 grams, were removed and seized. The suspect was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Resisting/Interfere with Felony Arrest, and Stealing. The suspect was also found to have an active warrant out of Waynesville, Missouri for Kidnapping. It was a Capias warrant and the warrant stated, "No Bond".

A passenger, was transported to Joplin City Jail for two active FTA warrants out of Joplin and the driver, was transported to jail and charged with DWS/DWR, Obstruction/Resisting, Fail to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle, and a FTA Warrant out of Seneca, Missouri for DWS/DWR.

On November 24, 2018 Officer Sandbothe responded to the west 7th Street Wal-Mart for a report of a shoplifting.

Prior to his arrival, the suspect, had attempted to walk out of the store with a TV without paying for it. He was confronted by loss prevention but fled in a blue Chrysler Pacifica. Officer Sandbothe knew this vehicle and put information out to on duty officers. The vehicle was located by Cpl. Kohler and stopped it at 118 N. Pearl. The driver and passenger were in the vehicle.

Officer Sandbothe responded to that location and during the investigation they found a baggie of Methamphetamine in the driver’s wallet. The passenger was also found to have a baggie of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia on him as well. Both were arrested and transported to the city jail on the drug related charges. It was also determined that the passenger had previously been trespassed from Wal-Mart and due to his theft related charges in this incident, he was charged with 1st Degree Burglary.

Officer Jason Sandbothe is a very proactive officer and consistently goes out on duty to seek and disrupt criminal behavior. These are just a few examples of the high-quality work he produces on a daily basis. Officer Sandbothe is being recognized as Officer of the Month for November 2018.

Respectfully,

Matthew Stewart
Chief of Police
