A 30-minute documentary on the long-running, local television program, “Teen Hop,” will begin airing on KGCS-TV this weekend. Air dates are Sunday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m., and Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m.
The documentary, which features nostalgic photos and interviews with former contestants on the show, was produced by Ashlea Zumwalt, a senior communications major. The documentary is also currently available on KGCS’s YouTube channel, “KGCS Missouri Southern.”
“Teen Hop” was inducted into this year’s Regional Media Hall of Fame on April 30. The show aired from 1958 to 1975 on KODE-TV and was the Four States version of “American Bandstand” - featuring students from area high schools in a dance competition. During the course of the show’s run, more than 15,000 students participated, representing over 60 high schools across Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 22. It is also available on regional cable television systems such as Cable One, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
