(From the Joplin Police Department)On July 1st , 2023, at 10:50 a.m., the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call of a disturbance happening at 2124 S. Sergeant Avenue.
A witness observed two adult males physically fighting nearby. As officers arrived on scene the suspect was observed fleeing on foot back into the residence.
After further investigation, it was determined that the suspect had been in an argument with his roommate and assaulted the victim.
During the assault the suspect stole a handgun from the victim before fleeing inside his residence. The suspect refused to exit the residence after numerous announcements and commands were given.
Based on the assault, weapons involved and history with the suspect, a search warrant was obtained for the residence and the Joplin Police Department SWAT Team was activated.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m., the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident by JPD SWAT Team members. He has been identified as Donald L. Smith II, age 40 of Joplin.
He was transported to the Joplin City Jail and charges were submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor's Office for Domestic Assault 3rd Degree, Robbery 1 st Degree, Possession of a Firearm Unlawful for Certain Persons, and Resisting Arrest.
