Carthage man charged with stealing Joplin resident's identity

On April 27th, 2015, a Joplin Police Detective arrested Jeremy J. Sanders, 35, Carthage, Mo., for identity theft.

The arrest was the result of a protracted investigation. The victim, Sumie Hashimoto, reported in February 2015, that someone had obtained multiple credit cards issued in her name. The investigation revealed that Sanders, an acquaintance of Hashimoto, had obtained Hashimoto’s personal information and subsequently created multiple accounts using her information.

Sanders fraudulently charged total of $19,117.95 to those accounts. $6,299.63 of the fraudulent charges were committed in Joplin.

As always, we encourage people to; collect mail promptly, pay attention to billing cycles, and watch for unauthorized transactions. Always store personal information in a safe place at home and at work and check your credit report once a year.
