Newman Building miniatures on sale during Third Thursday

(From the City of Joplin)

During July’s Third Thursday event, the Joplin City Clerk is hosting a “Christmas in July” event, giving the public a chance to purchase the final inventory of a limited edition miniature building of Joplin City Hall, formerly known as the Newman Building. Price of the buildings is $30.

The Newman Building, in reference to the Newman Mercantile Company, was built in 1910 and was placed on the National Register for Historic Places in 1990. Joplin City Hall was moved into the building in 2005.

This is offered as a “Christmas in July” sale to help raise funds for the holiday window displays. City Clerk Barbara Hogelin will have a table outside of City Hall at 602 South Main from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 16.

In addition to the buildings, a wide selection of City of Joplin lapel pins will be for sale at $1 each. Various pins are available including versions of the City’s flower (the iris), Route 66, City Seal, City Flag, a miner, and the state of Missouri. The pins are from previous years’ inventories that are generally given by City Council and administration as a way to thank citizens for acts of service and commemorate their recognition at Council meetings.

The Newman Building was originally sold at $50 each, with funds going toward the placement of a bronze City Seal on the first floor of City Hall in2009.
