EMT students will participate in a day of emergency scenarios from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in and around the Julio S. León Health Sciences Center at Missouri Southern State University.
More than 20 students will take part in the all-day event, practicing their abilities to care for trauma patients and responding to medical issues such as emergency childbirth, seizures, chest pains and anaphylaxis.
“We’ll divide our students into teams,” said Thad Torix, EMS instructor and clinical coordinator. “A dispatcher from Jasper County 911 will be volunteering her services. Students will have radios and be dispatched to calls, not knowing exactly what will happen.”
Torix said about 20 volunteers – including faculty members and practicing paramedics – will assist and stand in as patients during the scenarios. The event will also include practice skills examinations to help prepare students for their national boarding exams.
“The positive feedback we get from these events is overwhelming,” said Torix. “Nothing about this is required by any entity. But based on research, we know that these problem-based scenarios activate higher levels of learning. That’s why we do it.”
