Ribbon cutting set for Neosho drug take back box

(From the Alliance of Southwest Missouri)

NEOSHO, MO. In partnership with the Neosho Police Department, The City of Neosho, and Neosho Chamber of Commerce, The Alliance will be hosting a ribbon cutting for the permanent location of their drug take back box. The box is permanently installed in the Neosho Police Department, located at 201 N. College Street, Neosho, Missouri. The ribbon cutting will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the Neosho Police Department.

The involvement of the Neosho community wanting a box in their police department came from individuals in the area and their involvement with the Newton County Community Coalition. Tim Mitchell, owner of Mitchell’s Drug Stores in Neosho and Newton County Coalition President, states that, “It is important for our community to want these boxes. Last year alone, accidental overdoses of prescription drugs surpassed accidental deaths of car accidents. No community is immune to this epidemic and we should all be aware of the situation. These boxes are free to utilize and are a great way to dispose of your prescription drugs.” After holding drug take back events, the Alliance Coalitions saw importance of having permanent drop boxes in all four communities.

The drug take back boxes exist because the use of prescription drugs among teens is at an all-time high. Many people keep prescription drugs in their homes and medicine cabinets and do not properly dispose of them once they are expired or are no longer of need.

The Alliance is dedicated in making the four-states a safer, healthier community. This ribbon cutting could not be possible without the partnership of the Neosho Police Department, The City of Neosho, and the Neosho Chamber of Commerce.
