Joplin man charged with assault, armed criminal action following Friday shootings

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On September 8, 2017 two shootings were reported to the Joplin Police Department. A female and male were walking in the 600 block of South Sergeant around 10pm when a Gold Pontiac G6 drove by them, and a male passenger fired 4-5 shots at them. Neither person was hurt. The incident wasn’t reported to police for about 20 minutes.

Approximately an hour after the first incident, at 11:22pm, Officers responded to 209 South McKee for a report of a male with a gun. When officers arrived, they learned the male had fired the gun in the backyard at another male. Nobody was struck by the rounds. The male had left the scene in a Gold Pontiac G6. Officers developed a suspect and went to 1503 East Valley where they located the vehicle parked at the residence. Officers were able to see the suspect in a rear laundry room from outside, covering himself with clothes to hide. Due to the two shootings and the danger that suspect posed, a short standoff occurred at the residence. At 12:40am, the suspect complied with commands and exited the residence and was arrested without incident.

The suspect was identified as Tobija Rodgers, 31, Joplin. He was transported to the Joplin City Jail and charges were submitted. He was charged by the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office with First Degree Assault and Armed Criminal Action with a $25,000 cash bond for the McKee incident. The investigation is on-going into these incidents. The same charges are now being sought in the first incident that occurred on South Sergeant. No injuries at any scene were reported to police.
